  • The Income Gap Widens

    • From: austinrealestatenews
    • Description:

The Great Recession is not the great American equalizer after all. It's been widely reported recently that this recession hit middle and low income families the hardest, while the wealthy have continued to prosper. It may be chic to save and everyone brags about coupon clipping, but the idea that "we are all in this together" may not actually be the case.

According to the Associated Press, incomes have declined across all demographics, but at a greater percentage for middle and lower income groups. "Median income fell last year from $52,163 to $50,303, wiping out a decade's worth of gains to hit the lowest level since 1997." In fact, the gap between the rich and the poor has widened to the point that the wealthiest ten percent of Americans earned 11.4 times those below the poverty line earning $12,000 a year. Previously, the highest earning difference was 11.22 times higher in 2003.

The unemployment rate stands at a thirty year high of 9.7 and a great majority of those job losses have been lower income ones, particularly in construction and manufacturing. While wealthier Americans have had reductions in executive pay, far more of the middle and lower income earners have lost their jobs. This disparity between the rich and the poor is more pronounced in larger cities, like Atlanta, New York and Chicago.

The recession seems to be coming to a close with signs that the economy is finally growing. The Commerce Department reported that the economy shrank less than expected, with gross domestic product dipping just 0.7 percent from April to June, after dropping 6.4 percent in the first quarter of the year (AP). Measuring the value of all goods and services, the GPD is a good barometer of the health of the economy.

The better than anticipated numbers are attributed to businesses and consumers spending more than expected. The better news is largely credited to the government's $787 billion stimulus package and programs like Cash for Clunkers. What is not expected to improve anytime soon is the unemployment rate, which analysts believe will reach 10 percent by the end of the year.

As hiring in most sectors remains stagnate and layoffs continue, the gap between the haves and have-nots is likely to widen. Congress is considering ways to regulate executive pay and this along with The Great Recession is not the great American equalizer after all. Congress considering ways to regulate executive pay along with President Obama suggesting higher taxes on the wealthy as one the ways to pay for health care reform, the resentment between the two ends of the income spectrum may also increase. While the Great Recession is the worst state the economy has been in since the Great Depression, some Americans are faring better than others.

  • Pirates want 7 mil for hostage

    • From: CRYSTALCHRIS
    • Description:

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somali pirates who are demanding $7 million in ransom for a British sailing couple said Saturday that boats from other countries are plundering Somalia's fish-rich waters.

Ahmed Gadaf, who described himself as a spokesman for the pirates, said Western fishing vessels "harass" local fishermen and destroy their nets. Gadaf spoke to The Associated Press by satellite phone.

Gadaf says the British couple, Paul and Rachel Chandler, are safe and will not be harmed.

The British government on Saturday reiterated its refusal to ransom the pair, saying in a statement that officials would not make any "substantive concessions to hostage-takers, and that includes the payment of ransom."

The Chandlers were headed to Tanzania in their boat, the Lynn Rival, when a distress signal was sent Oct. 23. The British navy found their empty yacht on Thursday, and both have been in sporadic contact with the British media since.

Illegal fishing off the coast of Somalia stirs strong passions in the country. The country's prime minister, Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, said in a speech Wednesday that many countries are fishing illegally in Somali waters and have pushed formerly profitable Somali fishermen into the pirate trade.

He also said during Wednesday's appearance at London-based Chatham House think tank that many pirates are former fishermen "responding to the loss and disappearance of their livelihoods."

Helene Bours, an expert on fisheries in Africa who works as a consultant for non-governmental organizations in Africa and Europe, said she was skeptical that international overfishing in Somalia had a significant effect on the rise of piracy.

"The extent to which the piracy business has developed is way beyond a few fishermen turning (into) pirates," she said.

Bours most international ships operated far from the Somali coast in order to bring in deep-sea fish, and would not be competing with smaller Somali fishing boats working closer to shore. She cautioned however, that the lack of reliable information from the chaotic country made any assessment unreliable.

Sharmarke said he was aware of extensive foreign fishing off Somalia's coast.

"I shall not name names, but suffice to say many countries are fishing illegally in Somali waters," he said. "We estimate that the value of the fish being taken from our waters is perhaps hundreds of millions of dollars."

Pirate attacks have increased the last several weeks after the recent end of the monsoon season. An international armada is patrolling the region to try to stop the attacks.

  • Perry's Plan?

    • From: indispair
    • Description:

Ever heard of the Bilderburg Group? Maybe you should research them.

Just exactly what was Rick Perry's agenda when he went to Istambul Turkey to a secret meeting with the Bilderburg Group in 2007?

His press secretary said "the governor was invited to attend and speak about state-federal relations". To the Bilderburg Group? In Turkey?

I thought this would have been a violation of the "Logan Act"? Do you know what the Logan Act is? He violated it?

Now, why is it that this meeting was in "secret"? Aren't we entitled to know what those minutes contain? Didn't we pay the money out of our taxes to unknowingly let him make this out of country visit?

      Open government? I think not.

Wake up Sheeple, please wake up.

Now, start researching our high ranking officials and see what groups they belong to. Put the puzzle together.

Find out who's tied to what. You'll be amazed, if not angered.

  • The Great Recession Has Been a

    • From: austinrealestatenews
    • Description:

It is hard to believe just two years ago in October the Dow Jones industrial set a record high of 14,164. According to the Associated Press, just one year after that it was at 8,451 in mid October 2008. Today the Dow is around 9,800. Stocks have rallied recently on signs that retail sales are improving. The last two years have been a bumpy ride.

The AP recently broke down the economic numbers, putting into perspective just where the U.S. economy stands today. "The panic of last fall has been replaced by the resignation that the worst is over but it might be years before the economy booms again." It seems for every gain there is something else to put in the loss column. For example, while the stock market is steadily gaining ground, the total losses in the stock market from the peak of October 2007 to the bottom of March 2009 was a mind-boggling $11.2 trillion.

A positive sign is that after steadily declining for fourteen months, retail sales increased 2.7 percent in August. But the unemployment rate in October 2008 was 6.2 percent and today it is 9.8 percent. Consumer confidence, which is measured on a scale of 1 to 100, was at a record low of 25.3 last October and this month it is 53.1. To put these numbers in perspective, two years ago consumer confidence stood at 95.2.

Some oddly positive side effects of the Great Recession have been the increase in personal savings rate from 0.5 percent in 2005, when home prices were soaring, to 6.9 percent in May 2009. Also, credit card debt held by Americans last September was a staggering $975 billion. That number is down 8 percent now to $899 billion.

To put the housing numbers in perspective, 2005 was a record year with 7 million home resales. January 2009 the annual rate of home resales was 4.5 million, but rose to 5.1 million in August. On the other hand, the median price of homes sold in 2006 was a record high $245,000. The median price of homes sold last October was $213,000 and dipped to $195,000 in August.

Some other signs of the time: Starbucks launched an instant coffee product in September. PepsiCo Inc announced recently that it will continue to offer and develop products with price in mind, feeling customers will continue to be price-conscious even after the recession ends. Retailers will need to stay creative to entice shoppers this holiday season amid rising unemployment. Wall Street may be seeing a smoother path to recovery, but it's still a bumpy ride on Main Street.

"Give me control of a nation's money and I care not who makes it's laws" — Mayer Amschel Bauer Rothschild

      Senators and Congressmen

"Most Americans have no real understanding of the operation of the international money lenders. The accounts of the Federal Reserve System have never been audited. It operates outside the control of Congress and manipulates the credit of the United States" — Sen. Barry Goldwater (Rep. AR)

"This [Federal Reserve Act] establishes the most gigantic trust on earth. When the President [Wilson} signs this bill, the invisible government of the monetary power will be legalized....the worst legislative crime of the ages is perpetrated by this banking and currency bill." — Charles A. Lindbergh, Sr. , 1913

"From now on, depressions will be scientifically created." — Congressman Charles A. Lindbergh Sr. , 1913

"The financial system has been turned over to the Federal Reserve Board. That Board as ministers the finance system by authority of  a purely profiteering group. The system is Private, conducted for the sole purpose of obtaining the greatest possible profits from the use of other people's money" -- Charles A. Lindbergh Sr., 1923

"The Federal Reserve bank buys government bonds without one penny..." — Congressman Wright Patman, Congressional Record, Sept 30, 1941

"We have, in this country, one of the most corrupt institutions the world has ever known. I refer to the Federal Reserve Board. This evil institution has impoverished the people of the United States and has practically bankrupted our government. It has done this through the corrupt practices of the moneyed vultures who control it". — Congressman Louis T. McFadden in 1932 (Rep. Pa)

"The Federal Reserve banks are one of the most corrupt institutions the world has ever seen.
There is not a man within the sound of my voice who does not know that this nation is run by the
International bankers — Congressman Louis T. McFadden (Rep. Pa)

"Some people think the Federal Reserve Banks are the United States government's institutions.
They are not government institutions. They are private credit monopolies which prey upon the people of the United States for the benefit of themselves and their foreign swindlers" — Congressional Record 12595-12603 — Louis T. McFadden, Chairman of the Committee on Banking and Currency (12 years) June 10, 1932

"I have never seen more Senators express discontent with their jobs....I think the major cause is that, deep down in our hearts, we have been accomplices in doing something terrible and unforgivable to our wonderful country. Deep down in our heart, we know that we have given our children a legacy of bankruptcy. We have defrauded our country to get ourselves elected." — John Danforth (R-Mo)

"These 12 corporations together cover the whole country and monopolize and use for private
gain every dollar of the public currency..." — Mr. Crozier of Cincinnati, before Senate  Banking and Currency Committee - 1913

"The [Federal Reserve Act] as it stands seems to me to open the way to a vast inflation of the
currency... I do not like to think that any law can be passed that will make it possible to submerge the gold standard in a flood of irredeemable paper currency." — Henry Cabot Lodge Sr., 1913

From the Federal Reserves Own Admissions

"When you or I write a check there must be sufficient funds in out account to cover the check,
but when the Federal Reserve writes a check there is no bank deposit on which that check is drawn. When the Federal Reserve writes a check, it is creating money." — Putting it simply, Boston Federal Reserve Bank

"Neither paper currency nor deposits have value as commodities, intrinsically, a 'dollar' bill is just
a piece of paper. Deposits are merely book entries." — Modern Money Mechanics Workbook,
Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, 1975

"The Federal Reserve system pays the U.S. Treasury 020.60 per thousand notes --a little over
2 cents each-- without regard to the face value of the note. Federal Reserve Notes, incidentally, are the only type of currency now produced for circulation. They are printed exclusively by the
Treasury's Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and the $20.60 per thousand price reflects the Bureau's full cost of production. Federal Reserve Notes are printed in 01, 02, 05, 10, 20, 50, and 100 dollar denominations only; notes of 500, 1000, 5000, and 10,000 denominations were last printed in 1945." —Donald J. Winn, Assistant to the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve system

"We are completely dependant on the commercial banks. Someone has to borrow every dollar
we have in circulation, cash or credit. If the banks create ample synthetic money we are prosperous; if not, we starve. We are absolutely without a permanent money system.... It is the most important subject intelligent persons can investigate and reflect upon. It is so important that our present civilization may collapse unless it becomes widely understood and the defects remedied very soon." — Robert H. Hamphill, Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank

      From General Law

"The entire taxing and monetary systems are hereby placed under the U.C.C. (Uniform
Commercial Code)" — The Federal Tax Lien Act of 1966

"There is a distinction between a 'debt discharged' and a debt 'paid'. When discharged, the debt
still exists though divested of it's charter as a legal obligation during the operation of the discharge, something of the original vitality of the debt continues to exist, which may be transferred, even though the transferee takes it subject to it's disability incident to the discharge." —Stanek vs. White, 172 Minn.390, 215 N.W. 784

"The Federal Reserve Banks are not federal instrumentalities..." — Lewis vs. United States
      9th Circuit 1992

"The regional Federal Reserve banks are not government agencies. ...but are independent,
privately owned and locally controlled corporations." — Lewis vs. United States, 680 F. 2d 1239
      9th Circuit 1982

Past Presidents, not including the Founding Fathers

"Whoever controls the volume of money in any country is absolute master of all industry and
commerce." — James A. Garfield, President of the United States

"A great industrial nation is controlled by it's system of credit. Our system of credit is concentrated in the hands of a few men. We have come to be one of the worst ruled, one of the most completely controlled and dominated governments in the world--no longer a government of free opinion, no longer a government by conviction and vote of the majority, but a government by the opinion and duress of small groups of dominant men." — President Woodrow Wilson

Founding Father's Quotes on Banking  (Maybe some repeats from "Founding Father's Quotes" / Information tends to converge)

      Thomas Jefferson
"I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies.
Already they have raised up a monied aristocracy that has set the government at defiance. The
issuing power (of money) should be taken away from the banks and restored to the people to
whom it properly belongs." — Thomas Jefferson, U.S. President.

      Andrew Jackson
"If Congress has the right [it doesn't] to issue paper money [currency], it was given to them to be used by...[the government] and not to be delegated to individuals or corporations" — President Andrew Jackson, Vetoed Bank Bill of 1836

      James Madison
"History records that the money changers have used every form of abuse, intrigue, deceit, and violent means possible to maintain their control over governments by controlling money and it's issuance." — James Madison

Hawtrey, Secretary of the British Treasury

"To expose a 15 Trillion dollar rip-off of the American people by the stockholders of the 1000
largest corporations over the last 100 years will be a tall order of business." — Buckminster Fuller

"Every Congressman, every Senator knows precisely what causes inflation...but can't, [won't]

45 billion dollars in 1949 went directly to the private stockholders of the [federal reserve] banks." — Eustace Mullins

"As soon as Mr. Roosevelt took office, the Federal Reserve began to buy government securities
at the rate of ten million dollars a week for 10 weeks, and created one hundred million dollars in new [checkbook] currency, which alleviated the critical famine of money and credit, and the factories
started hiring people again." — Eustace Mullins

"Should government refrain from regulation (taxation), the worthlessness of the money becomes apparent and the fraud can no longer be concealed." — John Maynard Keynes, "Consequences of Peace."

"Banking was conceived in iniquity and was born in sin. The Bankers own the earth. Take it away from them, but leave them the power to create deposits, and with the flick of the pen they will create enough deposits to buy it back again. However, take it away from them, and all the great fortunes like mine will disappear and they ought to disappear, for this would be a happier and better world to live in. But, if you wish to remain the slaves of Bankers and pay the cost of your own slavery, let them continue to create deposits." — SIR JOSIAH STAMP, (President of the Bank of England in the 1920's, the second richest man in Britain):

"The modern Banking system manufactures money out of nothing. The process is perhaps the most astounding piece of sleight of hand that was ever invented. Banks can in fact inflate, mint and unmint the modern ledger-entry currency." — MAJOR L .L. B. ANGUS:

"While boasting of our noble deeds were careful to conceal the ugly fact that by an iniquitous money system we have nationalized a system of oppression which, though more refined, is not less cruel than the old system of chattel slavery. — Horace Greeley

"People who will not turn a shovel full of dirt on the project (Muscle Shoals Dam) nor contribute a pound of material, will collect more money from the United States than will the People who supply all the material and do all the work. This is the terrible thing about interest ...But here is the point: If the Nation can issue a dollar bond it can issue a dollar bill. The element that makes the bond good makes the bill good also. The difference between the bond and the bill is that the bond lets the money broker collect twice the amount of the bond and an additional 20%. Whereas the currency, the honest sort provided by the Constitution pays nobody but those who contribute in some useful way.  It is absurd to say our Country can issue bonds and cannot issue currency. Both are promises to pay, but one fattens the usurer and the other helps the People. If the currency issued by the People were no good, then the bonds would be no good, either. It is a terrible situation when the Government, to insure the National Wealth, must go in debt and submit to ruinous interest charges at the hands of men who control the fictitious value of gold. Interest is the invention of Satan." — THOMAS A. EDISON

"By this means government may secretly and unobserved, confiscate the wealth of the people,
and not one man in a million will detect the theft." — John Maynard Keynes (the father of 'Keynesian Economics' which our nation now endures) in his book "THE ECONOMIC CONSEQUENCES OF THE PEACE" (1920).

"Capital must protect itself in every way...Debts must be collected and loans and mortgages
foreclosed as soon as possible. When through a process of law the common people have lost their
homes, they will be more tractable and more easily governed by the strong arm of the law applied
by the central power of leading financiers. People without homes will not quarrel with their leaders. This is well known among our principal men now engaged in forming an imperialism of capitalism to govern the world. By dividing the people we can get them to expend their energies in fighting over questions of no importance to us except as teachers of the common herd."--  Taken from the Civil Servants' Year Book, "The Organizer" January 1934.

The Money Power! It is the greatest power on earth; and it is arrayed against Labour. No other power that is or ever was can be named with it... it attacks us through the Press - a monster with a thousand lying tongues, a beast surpassing in foulness any conceived by the mythology that invented dragons, were wolves, harpies, ghouls and vampires. It thunders against us from innumerable platforms and ,Yes, so far as we are concerned, the headquarters of the Money Power is Britain. But the Money Power is not a British institution; it is cosmopolitan. It is of no nationality, but of all nationalities. It dominates the world. The Money Power has corrupted the faculties of the human soul, and tampered with the sanity of the human intellect... Editorial from 1907 edition of The Brisbane Worker (Australia)

...I am convinced that the agreement [Bretton Woods] will enthrone a world dictatorship of private finance more complete and terrible than and Hitlerite dream. It offers no solution of world problems, but quite blatantly sets up controls which will reduce the smaller nations to vassal states and make every government the mouthpiece and tool of International Finance.  It will undermine and destroy the democratic institutions of this country - in fact as effectively as ever the Fascist forces could have done - pervert and paganise our Christian ideals; and will undoubtedly present a new menace, endangering world peace. World collaboration of private financial interests can only mean mass unemployment, slavery, misery, degradation and financial destruction. Therefore, as freedom loving Australians we should reject this infamous proposal. -- Labor Minister of Australia, Eddie Ward, during the inception of the World Bank and Bretton Woods, he gave this warning.

"Government spending is always a “tax” burden on the American people and is never equally or fairly distributed.  The poor and low-middle income workers always suffer the most from the deceitful tax of inflation and borrowing." -Congressman Ron Paul

      CASE DESIGN:
The laptop has plain boring black case, which is helped only by the subtle, but interesting design on the cover. It's not very noticeable or unique, but better than nothing. The cover and the screen itself is very glossy, and therefore prone to fingerprints, but the laptop comes with a cloth you can use to wipe them away with ease. Though I like that the screen is glossy, it can be annoying at times due to glare.

Furthermore, the power plug is on the right side of the laptop, which is rather inconvenient, especially if the outlet is on your left side. It would be better if the plug was located in the back. However, I do like how there are 2 USB ports on the right and one on the left, rather than all on one side, the back, or stacked on top of each other. This makes it easier to plug and remove them.

      KEYBOARD DESIGN:
The touchpad is glossy, like the rest of the laptop (but fingerprints do not show up on it), in comparison to Toshiba's commonly matte touchpads. The touchpad's buttons are also deeper, so you get more depth when pressing them, whereas Toshiba laptops have very flat buttons. One thing I like about HP laptops is the ability scroll via the touchpad by moving your finger downwards on the side of it. This is a unique and handy function, even though it can be hard to control sometimes--it's better than not having the function at all. This laptop also has a button for disabling the touchpad, so that you don't accidentally move the cursor when you're using a different mouse or something of that nature, which is quite handy.

On the other hand, the touch-sensitive Quickplay strip above your keyboard is more annoying than useful. It is supposed to be convenient for controlling media like DVDs etc. and controlling your volume. First of all, I find that the play, pause, fast forward, rewind, and stop buttons completely useless because I don't use any of the Quickplay features, except a DVD once in a while, and these buttons do not control your default media player (such as Winamp)--you must use the function keys instead, which can be annoying since you have to press 2 buttons at the same time. Secondly, when you press one of the buttons on the Quickplay strip, it is rather slow to react. For this reason, it is very difficult to control the volume using this strip, although it does work and is sufficient for my needs--I'd still prefer a regular volume control wheel or something. The one thing I do like about this strip is the "Mute" button. It seems more responsive than the other buttons.

      PERFORMANCE:
With 3GB RAM, this laptop is very fast (this is the most RAM you can utilize for 32-bit Vista, which is included with this product). I use Windows Vista with Aero and Search Indexing enabled--all that jazz--and it runs perfectly, no lag whatsoever. Even with Windows' built in Disk Defragmenter defragging or Acronis Image Home creating a full backup in the background on High Priority, there was little to no difference in performance (at least with regular usage). And this is all on medium performance too--imagine how fast it would be on maximum performance! I have no problems running Firefox, AIM, Photoshop CS, MS Word, etc. all at the same time, whereas on my old desktop, I would probably get a "Virtual Memory low" warning.

      HEAT & FAN:
The fan can be somewhat loud in a completely quiet room sometimes, but is otherwise, you won't notice it--my roommate's Dell laptop has a much louder fan that completely drowns out mine. The laptop is cool for the first 2 hours, but when running on battery, will get too hot for my lap. However, when plugged in, it seems to stay cool.

      GRAPHICS & GAMING:
Although this laptop can handle light gaming, such as Counter-strike etc., it will probably not do well with the higher end games of today because the graphics card is integrated and therefore, too slow for it. However, the graphics card performs just fine for all other functions (and looks great!).

      WEBCAM & MIC:
The integrated mic and webcam are very useful and function excellently. Although I don't use either very much, it would be nice if the webcam software had a way to time shots--there might be a function for this but it's not very obvious... Another thing is that the software included (Cyberlink YouCam) is a nuisance at first--when you first open it and download the update, it will place a shortcut on your desktop. If you delete the shortcut and then restart your computer, it will be there again. The only way I know of fixing this is by changing the registry key (Google it).

      SLEEP MODE:
The sleep mode on this laptop is very stable and it remains completely cool and silent. Even if the battery runs out during sleep mode, the laptop automatically hibernates, so when you turn on the laptop again, it will turn on faster and still have your session in memory. However, when waking up from sleep or hibernate, the laptop can be slow to recognize changes--for example, if you change wireless network locations, it will take about a minute to realize it needs to connect to a different network. Sometimes, it will also take a while to realize that you have plugged a mouse in to use before waking the computer up, so you will have to unplug and replug it back in. Otherwise, sleep mode is very handy, fast, and stable.

      BATTERY OBSERVATIONS:
      - With Wi-Fi card on, the laptop lasts for a little more than 2.5 hours on battery before reaching 10-20%. Not bad.
      - It takes about 1.5 hours to recharge from 10%-20%.

      OTHER NOTES:
      - Very portable and light at 14.1"
      - The Wi-Fi switch is uncomfortably in the front and somewhat easy to switch off by accident, but it's only happened to me once so far.
      - Comes with nice pair of earbuds and a remote (very nifty!)
      - Does not come with recovery CDs, but they can be made or ordered.
      - The power plug has three pins or blades (what's the word for it?), rather than the typical two. This is inconvenient because you have to get a power plug adapter in order for it to fit into certain power sockets.

      OVERALL:
I definitely recommend this laptop. It is more than enough for the majority of users--average and power users alike, with the only exception being serious gamers, and a perfect option for students. It was an absolute bargain for me, snagging it for $549.

A tsunami hurled by a powerful earthquake flattened Samoan villages and swept cars and people out to sea, killing at least 99 and leaving dozens missing Wednesday. The toll was expected to rise.

The same day, western Indonesia was rocked by a strong underwater temblor, briefly triggering a tsunami alert for countries along the Indian Ocean and sending panicked residents out of their houses. The alert was later canceled.

Survivors of the South Pacific islands tsunami fled the fast-churning water for higher ground and remained huddled there hours after the quake, with a magnitude between 8.0 and 8.3, struck around dawn Tuesday.

The quake was centered about 125 miles (200 kilometers) from Samoa, an island nation of 180,000 people located about halfway between New Zealand and Hawaii. It was about 120 miles (190 kilometers) from neighboring American Samoa, a U.S. territory that is home to 65,000 people.

Four tsunami waves 15 to 20 feet (4 to 6 meters) high roared ashore on American Samoa, reaching up to a mile (1.5 kilometers) inland, Mike Reynolds, superintendent of the National Park of American Samoa, was quoted as saying by a parks service spokeswoman.

Hampered by power and communications outages, officials struggled to determine damage and casualties.

  • Madoff's Mansions on the Marke

    • From: austinrealestatenews
    • Description:

Marshalls are preparing to put Madoff's mansions on the market, and victims of his ponzi scheme are hoping to cash in big time. Based on court records, the FBI is revving up to sell an estimated $30 million in real estate and property, all of which will go to his victims. The three homes on the way to market are a penthouse in Manhattan, a Montauk beach house on Long Island and a waterfront Palm Beach retreat.

Vacation real estate Madoff owned in Côte d'Azur that was seized by the feds back in March has since been sold. The chic three-bedroom Cap d'Antibes home netted $1.48 million noted the Justice Department. Funds from the sale are being held at the U.S. Marshall's office.

Marshalls opened the doors to Madoff's Manhattan luxury penthouse earlier in September giving the public a glimpse into the lifestyle of the previously rich rip-off artist. The two-story apartment was the location of Madoff's confinement during his house arrest.

Four fireplaces, a baby Steinway piano, antique rugs, custom-made furniture and other fine furnishings must have made Madoff quite comfortable while carrying out his Ponzi scheme. U.S. Marshall Roland Ubaldo said that the Manhattan penthouse was the crown jewel of all Madoff's properties seized by the government. It's easy to see why with all the lavish decorations and furnishings.

A wraparound terrace provides a stunning view of southern Manhattan. His and her closets contain Madoff's handmade Belgian shoes and boxes of designer clothing that are all packed away and awaiting auction. His den does not disappoint, either, with cherry paneling and a leather bull - his personal trademark.

According to court filings, the apartment was valued at $7.5 million by the FBI. One New York appraiser has his doubts about the appraisal. Miller Samuel appraiser, Jonathan Miller, said that what he'd seen of it so far would be considered fairly modest, in his opinion. He cited that it was not actually a Park Avenue duplex, which is what the press coverage had been calling it. Its address is on 64th Street and it sits a block east on the corner of Lexington.

The Montauk beach house with 3,000 square feet of living space sits on a one-and-a-half acre prime lot atop a bluff overlooking an ocean beach. It sits closer to the water's edge than would be allowed today due to earlier more lax zoning regulations.

Feds estimate its worth at $7 million, but tax assessments indicate its value at $3.3 million. Regardless, one real estate agent noted that the history and high-profile of the home may cause it to sell for as much as $10 million. Purchased in 1980, the Madoffs originally only paid $250,000 for the home.

Listed under Madoff's wife's name, the Palm Beach hideaway is valued at $7.5 million. Featuring a pool, 8,753 square feet of living space, five-bedrooms and seven-bathrooms, the two-story home sits on a waterfront half-acre plot. Included in the property is a boat dock where Madoff parked his now-seized yacht, the Bull. It is a 55-foot fishing vessel reportedly worth $1.5 million.

Well shaded by lots of large trees and a large second-floor veranda, the house sits just down the shore from a location where Madoff lured in many of his victims, the Palm Beach Country Club.

Madoff is making amends in his not-so-luxurious jail cell and the hope is that the victims he left as carnage will be reimbursed for some of their loss and suffering.

So, Panasonic VIERA X1 Series TC-P42X1 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV how did the TC-P46G10 work as an HDTV? Quite well. The setup was easy and straightforward. It was a simple task of connecting the cable from my rooftop antenna for over-the-air HD, Panasonic VIERA X1 Series TC-P42X1 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV and one HDMI cable into the HDMI 1 input. Except for over-the-air, Panasonic VIERA X1 Series TC-P42X1 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV all signals were routed through an Onkyo TX-SR875 A/V Receiver. HD video signals were provided by Dish Network’s ViP722 HD set-top box, Panasonic VIERA X1 Series TC-P42X1 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV and an LG Blu-ray player also served up 1080p content.

Key image enhancements include 600Hz Sub-Field Drive that offers greater clarity in fast moving scenes, Panasonic VIERA X1 Series TC-P42X1 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV especially in movies. Think of it as the plasma TV equivalent to 120Hz or 240Hz refresh rates on LCD TVs, Panasonic VIERA X1 Series TC-P42X1 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV but at a blazing 600Hz.

Movies have always been plasma’s strong suit, Panasonic VIERA X1 Series TC-P42X1 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV and they did not disappoint. The lush jungle flora of Lost Seasons 1 & 2, Panasonic VIERA X1 Series TC-P42X1 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV now finally on Blu-ray, Panasonic VIERA X1 Series TC-P42X1 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV looked so realistic that you could almost reach out and touch the greenery.

And via the SD card slot, Panasonic VIERA X1 Series TC-P42X1 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV the stills from my digital camera never looked so good blown up to 46 diagonal inches. Spectacular images of my recent trip to Italy and Greece from my Canon PowerShot SX10 IS, Panasonic VIERA X1 Series TC-P42X1 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV which is a 10 megapixel camera, Panasonic VIERA X1 Series TC-P42X1 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV made me wistful for the Amalfi Coast again!

The Panasonic Viera TC-P46G10 is an excellent example of a new breed of plasma HDTV that rendered images from all sources quite well. Brightness and contrast ratio were very good, Panasonic VIERA X1 Series TC-P42X1 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV even in a brightly lit room. All it took was some manipulation of the picture settings from the on-screen menus to render razor-sharp and natural-looking images.

But what separates this model from others on the market is its Viera Cast service. I found it to be handy and easy to use. Image “burn in” was not an issue either. And the set’s list price of $1, Panasonic VIERA X1 Series TC-P42X1 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV500—or approximately $1, Panasonic VIERA X1 Series TC-P42X1 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV100 on Amazon.com—makes it quite the bargain.

  • AUSTRALIA RED SKY: GREAT VIDEO

    • From: zackshields
    • Description:

No one was hurt as a result of the pall that swept in overnight, bringing an eerie orange dawn to Sydney, but ambulance services reported a spike in emergency calls from people with breathing difficulties, and police warned drivers to take it easy on the roads.

Dust clouds blowing east from Australia's dry interior — parched even further by the worst drought on record — covered dozens of towns and cities in two states as strong winds snatched up tons of topsoil, threw it high into the sky and carried it hundreds of miles (kilometers).

International flights were diverted from Sydney to other cities — three from New Zealand were turned around altogether — and domestic schedules were thrown into chaos as operations at Sydney Airport were curtailed by unsafe visibility levels. Passenger ferries on the city's famous harbor were also stopped for several hours for safety reasons.

The storms — visible as a huge brown smudge in satellite photographs of Australia on Wednesday — are the most severe since the 1940s, experts said. One was recorded traveling from southern Australia all the way to New Zealand some 1,400 miles (2,220 kilometers) away.

Here is some of the video of the red and weird looking sky caused by the rare and massive dust storm.

ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-PU1X-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook – 10.5 Hour Battery Life Reviews

I Really Like my Little ASUS Netbook I studied different models quite a lot be for selecting the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-PU1X. I like having both Wi-Fi and wired network jack.
The BlueTooth capability is great and mainly use with a Logitec Bluetooth mouse M/N: M-RCQ142 bought at the same time. The touch pad is pretty good but the bluetooth mouse is nice if you have much to do.
I got the 2Gig memory upgrade but it seems to work just fine with the supplied 1Gig RAM.
Battery life is great and it seems to charge fast as well. The only concern is charger connection mentioned by others. It does seem a little delicate. I would definately buy this item again.

Amazing little box So far I have use the notebook/netbook for over 6 hours without re-charging and it still shows in excess of 5 hours remaining. Great for taking to meetings were power may not be available. Light weight, fast, great connectivity. The 3/4 keyboard is very well made, nice feel to the key press and the full sized right shift button is great! I have the 2 Gig memory upgrad and have loaded MS Office 2007 with no problems. So far I have nothing but good things to say about this little box. If you can affort the few extra bucks this is the only one to consider. Amazon was great, the product was the best price, fast shipping, and received as promissed.

  • Lawmakers run from Prez Carter

    • From: CRYSTALCHRIS
    • Description:

Jimmy Carter is 84 years old and three decades removed from the White House, but he still has the power to make Democrats run.

      Away from him, that is.

From the White House to Capitol Hill on Wednesday, Democrats raced to distance themselves from the former president’s claim that racism was behind Rep. Joe Wilson’s “You lie” outburst and other attacks on President Barack Obama.

“Listen, he’s the former president, and he’s entitled to his point of view,” said Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.). “I personally believe President Obama and his administration are focused on the issues, and I agree with that.”

“I don’t see this as a racial issue,” added Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.). “There are a lot of people upset about how we on the Democratic side can engage like we have been, and there’s a lot of anger out there. So, I don’t see it as a racial issue.”

“I didn’t agree with it,” Sen. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) said of Carter’s remarks.

Congressional Democrats have no interest in starting a racial argument that could turn off swing district voters whose support the party will need if it plans on keeping its grip on Congress in 2010. And the current occupants of the White House made it clear Wednesday that they have no interest in bringing race back to the fore of any discussion about Obama.

“The president does not believe that criticism comes based on the color of his skin,” White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters in his Wednesday briefing. “We understand that people have disagreements with some of the decisions that we’ve made and some of the extraordinary actions that had to be taken by both this administration and the previous administration.”

Carter said Tuesday that there’s “an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president,” and that that feeling drives some of the anti-Obama dissent.

He isn’t the first to suggest that race is driving some of the anti-Obama animus. Reps. Lacy Clay (D-Mo.) and David Scott (D-Ga.), among others, have suggested that Wilson wouldn’t have interrupted a white president. And New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd wrote that “fair or not,” she heard “an unspoken word in the air: You lie, boy!”

In the hours before Tuesday’s vote, Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.), a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, predicted that if Wilson’s outburst were allowed to go unpunished, “We will have people with white hoods running through the countryside again.”

But, by and large, congressional Democrats have tried to keep the race factor out of the Wilson debate.

With their resolution Tuesday night reprimanding Wilson, Democrats had sought to refocus their narrative toward their efforts to turn around the nation’s economy and pass a sweeping health care reform bill. Leaders had spent Tuesday trying to prevent anger among black lawmakers from boiling over in that evening’s floor debate about a resolution reprimanding Wilson.

During a caucus meeting just hours before the start of the debate, Democratic leadership aides said that Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, an African-American from Wilson’s South Carolina, pleaded with his fellow Democrats to keep the debate far from the racial issue.

But Carter’s comments brought them right back to it — even as they tried to get away.

“I just think 2010 will be about — as most midterm elections are — the whole economic well-being of America,” said Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), who heads up the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. “And that’s what the focus should be.”

“We should take our cue from President Obama,” Durbin told POLITICO. As his personal friend for many years, I can tell you, he is the last person to raise this issue.”

Wilson brushed off Carter’s comments Wednesday, telling POLITICO that they were a “distraction” — a point with which some of Wilson’s critics agreed.

Democratic Rep. Chet Edwards, who has represented a conservative, heavily white Texas district for 18 years, said he didn’t believe there was any evidence to support Carter’s assertion that racial factors had motivated Wilson.

“I just don’t want a divisive dialogue on race to become a battering ram of division for our country,” he said.

Alabama Democratic Rep. Artur Davis agreed. “It’s not a productive or healthy conversation,” he said.

  • Mary Travers Dies P P& M

    • From: CRYSTALCHRIS
    • Description:

BOSTON – Mary Travers, who as one-third of the hugely popular 1960s folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary helped popularize such tunes as "Puff (The Magic Dragon)" and "If I Had a Hammer," died Wednesday after battling leukemia for several years. She was 72.

The band's publicist, Heather Lylis, says Travers died at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut.

Bandmate Peter Yarrow said that in her final months, Travers handled her declining health with bravery and generosity, showing her love to friends and family "with great dignity and without restraint."

"It was, as Mary always was, honest and completely authentic," he said. "That's the way she sang, too; honestly and with complete authenticity."

Noel "Paul" Stookey, the trio's other member, praised Travers for her inspiring activism, "especially in her defense of the defenseless."

"I am deadened and heartsick beyond words to consider a life without Mary Travers and honored beyond my wildest dreams to have shared her spirit and her career," he said.

Mary Allin Travers was born on Nov. 9, 1936 in Louisville, Ky., the daughter of journalists who moved the family to Manhattan's bohemian Greenwich Village. She quickly became enamored with folk performers like the Weavers, and was soon performing with Pete Seeger, a founding member of the Weavers who lived in the same building as the Travers family.

With a group called the Song Swappers, Travers backed Seeger on one album and two shows at Carnegie Hall. She also appeared (as one of a group of folk singers) in a short-lived 1958 Broadway show called "The Next President," starring comedian Mort Sahl.

It wasn't until she met up with Yarrow and Stookey that Travers would taste success on her own. Yarrow was managed by Albert B. Grossman, who later worked in the same capacity for Bob Dylan.

In the book "Positively 4th Street" by David Hajdu, Travers recalled that Grossman's strategy was to "find a nobody that he could nurture and make famous."

The budding trio, boosted by the arrangements of Milt Okun, spent seven months rehearsing in her Greenwich Village apartment before their 1961 public debut at the Bitter End.

Their beatnik look — a tall blonde flanked by a pair of goateed guitarists — was a part of their initial appeal. As The New York Times critic Robert Shelton put it not long afterward, "Sex appeal as a keystone for a folk-song group was the idea of the group's manager ... who searched for months for `the girl' until he decided on Miss Travers."

The trio mingled their music with liberal politics, both onstage and off. Their version of "If I Had a Hammer" became an anthem for racial equality. Other hits included "Lemon Tree," "Leaving on a Jet Plane" and "Puff (The Magic Dragon.)"

They were early champions of Dylan and performed his "Blowin' in the Wind" at the August 1963 March on Washington.

And they were vehement in their opposition to the Vietnam War, managing to stay true to their liberal beliefs while creating music that resonated in the American mainstream.

The group collected five Grammy Awards for their three-part harmony on enduring songs like "Leaving on a Jet Plane," "Puff (The Magic Dragon)" and "Blowin' in the Wind."

At one point in 1963, three of their albums were in the top six Billboard best-selling LPs as they became the biggest stars of the folk revival movement.

It was heady stuff for a trio that had formed in the early 1960s in Greenwich Village, running through simple tunes like "Mary Had a Little Lamb."

Their debut album came out in 1962, and immediately scored a pair of hits with their versions of "If I Had a Hammer" and "Lemon Tree." The former won them Grammys for best folk recording, and best performance by a vocal group.

"Moving" was the follow-up, including the hit tale of innocence lost, "Puff (The Magic Dragon)" — which reached No. 2 on the charts, and generated since-discounted reports that it was an ode to marijuana.

Album No. 3, "In the Wind," featured three songs by the 22-year-old Dylan. "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" and "Blowin' in the Wind" both reached the top 10, bringing Dylan's material to a massive audience; the latter shipped 300,000 copies during one two-week period.

"Blowin' In the Wind" became an another civil rights anthem, and Peter, Paul and Mary fully embraced the cause. They marched with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, Ala., and performed with him in Washington.

In a 1966 New York Times interview, Travers said the three worked well together because they respected one another. "There has to be a certain amount of love just in order for you to survive together," she said. "I think a lot of groups have gone down the tubes because they were not able to relate to one another."

With the advent of the Beatles and Dylan's switch to electric guitar, the folk boom disappeared. Travers expressed disdain for folk-rock, telling the Chicago Daily News in 1966 that "it's so badly written. ... When the fad changed from folk to rock, they didn't take along any good writers."

But the trio continued their success, scoring with the tongue-in-cheek single "I Dig Rock and Roll Music," a gentle parody of the Mamas and the Papas, in 1967 and the John Denver-penned "Leaving on a Jet Plane" two years later.

They also continued as boosters for young songwriters, recording numbers written by then-little-known Gordon Lightfoot and Laura Nyro.

In 1969, the group earned their final Grammy for "Peter, Paul and Mommy," which won for best children's album. They disbanded in 1971, launching solo careers — Travers released five albums — that never achieved the heights of their collaborations.

Over the years they enjoyed several reunions, including a performance at a 1978 anti-nuclear benefit organized by Yarrow and a 35th anniversary album, "Lifelines," with fellow folkies Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Dave Van Ronk and Seeger. A boxed set of their music was released in 2004.

They remained politically active as well, performing at the 1995 anniversary of the Kent State shootings and performing for California strawberry pickers.

Travers had undergone a successful bone marrow transplant to treat her leukemia and was able to return to performing after that.

"It was like a miracle," Travers told The Associated Press in 2006. "I'm just feeling fabulous. What's incredible is someone has given your life back. I'm out in the garden today. This time last year I was looking out a window at a hospital." She also said she told the marrow donor "how incredibly grateful I was."

But by mid-2009, Yarrow told WTOP radio in Washington that her condition had worsened again and he thought she would no longer be able to perform.

Travers lived for many years in Redding, Conn. She is survived by her husband, Ethan Robbins and daughters, Alicia and Erika.

  • Fake Cashiers Checks???

    • From: rbb50
    • Description:

I was reading a story recently where people had accepted fake cashier checks for payment on the sale of some of their property only to find out later they were fake losing not only their property but getting in trouble with the bank they do business with also.

Right off I had to think how could anyone ever fall for that when every single cashiers check I have ever seen has a phone number on it to call then the story went on to explain some of the phone numbers on them are a number that a co conspirator is standing by to answer to verify it is a good check

In that case I would think why even call that number and verify it with a number they find to be correct from a phone book listing or by looking it up on the internet and of course that was one of the solutions of how not to get scammed in this way.

Once I had a talk with Frank Abagnale Jr by chance and he was telling me his story and I replied to him that I could do all of that but it would all be within the law and I already know a lot about medicine and was studying law and was on my way to study electrical engineering and after that I would study just about every thing just as a way to save my self money but never use it for any kind of criminal activity

He looked at me and said, “You know what, I do believe you will do that as I can tell your extremely intelligent”

So back to the story of the fake cashiers checks

I wondered what old Frank would think about them and the ones I saw that people accepted would in no way ever get by me or Frank either before we spotted them as fakes instantly

I got on my computer and figured out a way I could go to bank sites and get the information I needed along with some logo pictures and some neat water marks and made one for myself just to see if I could

Believe me if you saw the one I made Frank you would not even be able to recognize it as a fake cashiers check from Wells Fargo but once I was finished I of course deleted all the files and shredded the check of which I had only completed one side of anyway which was the front.

In that way I could see how if there ever were criminals still around that were as smart as Frank or me they could be stealing millions from people and not even the banks or anyone accepting those checks would ever know it until it was too late.

I also found another way to take a normal check and turn it into something entirely different of which I did not do but I did figure out how to do it

All the information I needed was right on the internet and a computer would facilitate everything I would need to do to make that happen

Frank came from a day and age where people could get their hands on a couple of machines or a printing press and go hog wild with them stealing millions from unsuspecting consumers but in today’s day and age the computer and the internet helps them steal almost in the same way and makes it even easier than the day and age he lived in.

If I could ever talk to that man again the first thing I would tell him is, “Frank we have a huge problem now days” then I would show him what I mean.

The fact that I could do something like that just tells me banks still do not have enough security on their web sites of which is readily available such as right click alerts keeping anyone from copying anything such as logos and other pictures from their web sites.

There are other securities they can easily implement such as no save of the web page and others that would keep anyone from ever being able to get those logo pictures and other stuff they could use to swindle consumers.

Kind of found it odd I found sites explaining all about routing numbers and exactly what they mean and how they are used on some bank web sites.

I just do not understand how I could even go to those sites and start getting all the pictures I needed as a way to make one of those checks to begin with anyway after all it is a bank web site

What I do understand is their so called web masters must be total morons without a clue because I could implement every one of those fixes to make it where no one could hack their site in anyway and I’m just an ordinary intelligent person as far as I know.

Simple business web sites I set up always have those securities and none of them are even banks at all and only personal web sites and stuff I do for free.

I guess my question is, How much are banks paying people to design and set up those so called secure web sites for them in a way an ordinary person like myself can go in and do such a thing such as that?

Is there any high priced job openings around town for say such as the $500,000 a year the city of Austin was paying at one time to have one of those same kind of web masters that obviously did not know their head from a hole in the ground.

Believe me I sure know my head from a hole in the ground and I would be glad to fix those sites for way less than $500,000 a year.

If your interested then let me know and I will be glad to talk to you.

In the mean time if you read this Frank you should give me a call because things have changed a lot since the last time we talked in 1974 LOL

My website http://raybb.com/  helps consumers with problems and questions they have about HVAC companies they do business with and what to be on the look out for and I do all of that for free.

Your site http://www.abagnale.com/  does all that stuff about explaining those other bank and securities frauds and I'm sure you get paid well for that.

Could be you are just like I am and we both cannot be every place at once to protect those unknowing consumers no matter what jobs we have.

I write the blogs some times when I find a need to inform them anyway and sure hope all of those banks give you a call and ask what you can do to help them.

Hey if they call me and want my help I'll be glad to help also but I'm not in the business of doing that at this time, yet I sure see a giant need for it now after my little experiment.

    • Two firefighters were killed

      • From: CRYSTALCHRIS
      • Description:

LOS ANGELES – Two firefighters were killed Sunday when their vehicle rolled down a mountain side amid the intense flames of a wildfire that threatened 12,000 homes. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger urged those in the fire's path to get out as the blazes rained ash on cars as far away as downtown Los Angeles, spreading in all directions in dry conditions.

Firefighters fixed their attention on the blaze's fast-moving eastern side where flames lapped at the foot of the vital communications and astronomy center of Mount Wilson, and on the northwestern front, where the two firefighters were killed on Mount Gleason near the city of Acton.

"We ask for your understanding, for your patience as we move through this difficult time, and please, prayers for the families of our two brothers that we lost," Los Angeles County Deputy Fire Chief Mike Bryant said through tears at a Sunday night press conference.

Bryant said the men's families have been notified. He did not release their identities or give a cause for the crash, and officials at the press conference would take no questions on the deaths.

Television helicopter video on Sunday night showed an upside-down vehicle on the mountain side.

The blaze was only about 5 percent contained and had scorched 66 square miles in the Angeles National Forest. Mandatory evacuations were in effect for neighborhoods in Glendale, Pasadena and other cities and towns north of Los Angeles. Officials said air quality in parts of the foothills bordered on hazardous.

The fire, which broke out Wednesday afternoon, was the largest of many burning around California, including a new blaze in Placer County northeast of Sacramento that destroyed several homes and businesses.

The Southern California fire was expected during the night Sunday to reach the top of Mount Wilson, where 22 television stations, many radio stations and cell phone providers have their transmitters, said U.S. Forest Service Capt. Mike Dietrich.

Television stations said if the antennas burn broadcast signals will be affected but satellite and cable transmissions will not be.

Two giant telescopes and several multimillion-dollar university programs are housed in the century-old Mount Wilson Observatory. The complex of buildings is both a historic landmark and a thriving modern center for astronomy.

At least 18 homes were destroyed in the fire and firefighters expected to find many more, authorities said.

While thousands have fled, two people who tried to ride out the firestorm in a backyard hot tub were burned. The pair in Big Tujunga Canyon, on the southwestern edge of the fire, "completely underestimated the fire" and the hot tub provided "no protection whatsoever," Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said Sunday.

The pair made their way to firefighters and were airlifted out by a sheriff's rescue helicopter. They received adequate notification to evacuate from deputies but decided to stay, Whitmore said.

Whitmore described their condition as "critical" but fire officials said one of the two was treated and released and the other remained hospitalized in stable condition. A third person was burned Saturday in an evacuation area along Highway 2 near Mount Wilson, officials said. Details of that injury were not immediately known.

"There were people that did not listen, and there were three people that got burned and got critically injured because they did not listen," Schwarzenegger said at a news conference at the fire command post.

For the third straight day, humidity was very low and temperatures were expected in the high 90s. Nearly 3,000 firefighters were battling the blaze.

Mandatory evacuations were also in effect for neighborhoods in Altadena and for the communities of Acton, La Canada Flintridge, La Crescenta and Big Tujunga Canyon.

There was some progress Sunday, as a small number of La Canada Flintridge residents living west of the Arroyo Seco were told they could go back to their homes.

But more evacuations were ordered in Acton in the Antelope Valley, and school districts in La Canada Flintridge and Glendale announced that classes were canceled Monday because of the fire.

Fixed-wing aircraft and a DC-10 jumbo jet were dropping water and flame retardant on the fire.

At the fire command post, Schwarzenegger praised firefighters for successfully protecting subdivisions in the foothills.

Rob Driscoll and his wife, Beth Halaas, said they lost their house in Big Tujunga Canyon. By Sunday they were desperate for more information and came to the command post to get answers.

"Our neighbors sent us photos of all the other houses that are lost," Halaas said, her voice breaking as her young son nestled his sunburned face in her arms. "We've heard as many as 30 houses burned."

At least 12 evacuation centers were set up at schools and community centers in the area.

The center at Crescenta Valley High School filled up, but by Sunday afternoon fewer than two dozen people remained. Residents trickled in to get information and snacks.

Debbie and Mercer Barrows said their house was saved but they lost their scenic view of a hillside to the flames.

"That'll grow back," said Mercer Barrows, a TV producer.

To the north, several homes and businesses were destroyed in a fast-moving fire that broke out Sunday afternoon in the Sierra foothills town of Auburn northeast of Sacramento and the governor declared a state of emergency in the area.

The fire had consumed 275 acres amid high winds and was 50 percent contained after dark Sunday, City of Roseville fire division chief Dennis Mathisen said.

About 30 people waited anxiously for news at an evacuation center in the Rock Creek Elementary School.

Pam and Stephen Incerty did not know the fate of their home on a beautiful 5-acre parcel in the rolling hills covered with trees.

Stephen Incerty wondered what the land looks like now after fire has ripped through it.

"If there's nothing there when we get back, we won't rebuild," he said. "There'd be no trees, just dirt."

In the state's coastal midsection, all evacuation orders were lifted Sunday after a 10-square-mile fire burned near the Monterey County town of Soledad. The blaze, 80 percent contained, was started by agricultural fireworks used to scare animals away from crops. The fire destroyed one home.

In Mariposa County, a nearly 7-square-mile fire burned in Yosemite National Park. The blaze was 50 percent contained Sunday, said park spokeswoman Vickie Mates. Two people sustained minor injuries, she said.

Park officials closed a campground and a portion of Highway 120, anticipating that the fire would spread north toward Tioga Road, the highest elevation route through the Sierra.

About 50 homes in the towns of El Portal and Foresta were under evacuation orders and roads in the area will remain closed through Monday, Mates sai
