This year's Leonid meteor shower peaks tonight. If forecasters are correct,the shower should produce a mild but pretty sprinkling of meteors over North America followed by a more intense outburst over Asia. The phase of the Moon will be new, setting the stage for what could be one of the best Leonid showers in years.
We're predicting 20 to 30 meteors per hour over the Americas, and as many as 200 to 300 per hour over Asia," says Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office. "Our forecast is in good accord with independent theoretical work by other astronomers.
Leonids are bits of debris from Comet Tempel-Tuttle. Every 33 years the comet visits the inner solar system and leaves a stream of dusty debris in its wake. Many of these streams have drifted across the November portion of Earth's orbit. Whenever we hit one, meteors come flying out of the constellation Leo.
It's just a coincidence. This year, Mars happens to be passing by the Leonid radiant at the time of the shower. The Red Planet is almost twice as bright as a first magnitude star, so it makes an eye-catching companion for the Leonids:

A NASA spacecraft's third and final flyby of the planet Mercury gives scientists, for the first time, an almost complete view of the planet's surface and provides new scientific findings about this relatively unknown planet.
The Mercury Surface, Space Environment, Geochemistry and Ranging spacecraft, known as MESSENGER, flew by Mercury on Sept. 29. The probe completed a critical gravity assist to remain on course to enter into orbit around Mercury in 2011. Despite shutting down temporarily because of a power system switchover during a solar eclipse, the spacecraft's cameras and instruments collected high-resolution and color images unveiling another 6 percent of the planet's surface never before seen at close range.![WAC_NAC_web[1].png](http://media.kickstatic.com/kickapps/images/82263/photos/PHOTO_6371918_82263_4690568_ap_320X240.jpg "WAC_NAC_web[1].png")
Approximately 98 percent of Mercury's surface now has been imaged by NASA spacecraft. After MESSENGER goes into orbit around Mercury, it will see the polar regions, which are the only unobserved areas of the planet.
Many new features were revealed during the third flyby, including a region with a bright area surrounding an irregular depression, suspected to be volcanic in origin. Other images revealed a double-ring impact basin approximately 180 miles across. The basin is similar to a feature scientists call the Raditladi basin, which was viewed during the probe's first flyby of Mercury in January 2008.
"This double-ring basin, seen in detail for the first time, is remarkably well preserved," said Brett Denevi, a member of the probe's imaging team and a postdoctoral researcher at Arizona State University in Tempe. "One similarity to Raditladi is its age, which has been estimated to be approximately one billion years old. Such an age is quite young for an impact basin, because most basins are about four times older. The inner floor of this basin is even younger than the basin itself and differs in color from its surroundings. We may have found the youngest volcanic material on Mercury."
One of the spacecraft's instruments conducted its most extensive observations to date of Mercury's exosphere, or thin atmosphere, during this encounter. The flyby allowed for the first detailed scans over Mercury's north and south poles. Despite persistently low demand, prices for gasoline have spiked over the past week along with crude oil, threatening one of the very few points of relief for the recession-striken U.S. consumer: Cheap gas.
That may be frustrating for consumers with few signs people are driving more now than during what was a dismal summer for the travel industry. People aren't buying much gasoline.
"I wish it could go down under $2," said Cheryl Couture, 50, who was filling up at a Speedway station in Columbus, Ohio, where a gallon had risen to $2.55.
Couture has watched as gas prices have ticked higher. Prices have risen for three straight weeks, reaching a national average Monday of $2.564 per gallon according to auto club AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service. The Energy Information Administration put the national average for unleaded regular at $2.574 per gallon.
Rather than rising consumer demand or a tightening of supply, the falling U.S. dollar is most likely to blame.
All one needs to do is look at the price of crude, which crossed $75 for the first time on Wednesday, then neared $80 on Monday.
A cheaper dollar lures more investors into the oil markets because oil is bought and sold with the U.S. currency. Investors, many of whom are betting on a further rally in crude, can buy more oil when the greenback loses value against other currencies. The dollar has continued to fall throughout the month.
And the rising price of crude is exacerbating problems that already existed for the refiners that make and sell gasoline.
People are driving less, trucking companies are shipping less, and airlines are cutting back on jet fuel purchases because businesses travel has ebbed.
That lack of demand has forced refiners to cut back production to levels more common in the aftermath of a hurricane.
And because crude prices are rising, profit margins at refiners who must buy crude to make fuel are shrinking. As a result, they are making even less fuel.
U.S. gasoline supplies fell by more than 5 million barrels last week, but are still well above normal levels at this time of year.
Gasoline purchases by Americans plunged in late 2007 when the recession began to grip the country. Between November 2007 and October 2008, the nation collectively drove 100 billion fewer miles, the largest continuous decline in history, according to the Federal Highway Administration.
Miles driven through July of this year are down 1.25 percent despite the cheapest gasoline in three to five years.
San Antonio-based Valero Energy Corp. last month said it would idle two units at its Delaware City, Del., plant, cutting about 150 jobs, and Sunoco Inc. earlier this month said it would indefinitely idle its West Deptford, N.J., facility, which has about 400 full-time workers.
"Refiners don't want to own crude, it's Wall Street traders who want it and I'd like for someone to explain that to me," said energy analyst Stephen Schork. "If we're spending a greater proportion of our incomes on gas right now, that doesn't bode well. It's less money we're spending elsewhere."
Prices remain relatively low so it's not clear how that would affect consumer thinking on fuel costs. Few people noticed that this has been the biggest run up in October gasoline prices since at least 2000.
James Hamilton, an economist at the University of California San Diego, doesn't expect the recent jump to be an economic tipping point like last summer when gasoline prices spiked to a record $4.11 a gallon.
That could change if prices top $3 per gallon, given the economic environment, he said.
Most energy experts see no fundamental reason for rising prices and doubt that gasoline will reach that high, at least this winter.
Benchmark crude for November delivery rose $1.08 to settle at $79.61 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Because crude makes up about 64 percent of the cost of each gallon of gas, pump prices are likely to follow.
Gas prices have lagged oil prices so far and will likely rise another 10 cents a gallon over the next week, said Andrew Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates.
He too cites the weak dollar and policies by the U.S. Federal Reserve.
"We're hearing word that they'd like to see a stronger dollar, but really no action," Lipow said.
In other Nymex trading, heating oil rose 2.25 cents to settle at $2.0522 a gallon and gasoline for November delivery was essentially flat, closing at $1.9872 a gallon. Natural gas for November delivery rose 5.2 cents to settle at $4.835 per 1,000 cubic feet.
In London, Brent crude for December delivery rose 78 cents to settle at $77.77 on the ICE Futures exchange.

4 Divisions of Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio:
* CCR (Concurrency and Coordination Runtime) - makes asynchronous programming simple. The CCR makes it simple to write up programs to handle asynchronous input from multiple robotics sensors and output to motors and actuators. With the use of CCR, we don't need to do any manual threads management. This can be peculiarly splendid in handling concurrency and partial failure. CCR has a failure handling mechanism called Causalities. This is basically a generalization of Try / Catch for multiple threads. But this is for many machines and processes working in synchronous fashion. This is the base of Robotics architecture by Microsoft. You can even use this component for the applications running on a PC instead of a robot. CCR is available in the form of a dynamic link library which may be used by any .net language.* DSS (Decentralized Software Services) Is the services architecture, and it is a companion to CCR. This is based on Service Oriented Architecture. This makes it possible to write down applications that are very distributed and modular. This allows you to execute your code in the processing work horses and use anywhere in the distributed environment. The DSS makes it simple to access, and respond to, a robot's state using a Web browser or Windows-based application. This allows real-time monitoring of robotics sensors and real-time response to motors and actuators.
* VPL (Microsoft Visual Programming Language) Is a visual programming tool that is used for creating and debugging robot applications, web-based and windows-based interfaces.
* VSE (Visual Simulation Environment) Allows one to simulate the behavior of robots in a virtual world using NVIDIA PhysX technology (3D engine) that includes advanced physics.
The Runtime environment Consists of two elements: the CCR and the DSS. The runtime is based on a lightweight REST-oriented services model. Making it REST based has made the services and applications to be independent of each other. They may be on the same machine or distributed across several machines connected through several methods. When we talk about REST based, This means that the resources should be available by query strings. These services are available as resources to the other services, applications or User Interfaces. This is, in reality, how Microsoft is able to promise low coupling between services. The Runtime supports from 8-bit to 32-bit robots. These robots may range from Toy Robots to Industrial Robots.
Microsoft Visual Programming Language Robotics programs . Just drag and drop blocks that represent services, and connect them. It is also possible to take a collection of connected blocks and reuse them as a single block elsewhere in the program. VPL follows the Observer Pattern. This implies that it is not based on Control flow but on data flow which allows some program elements to get executed when some data arrives. VPL provides a model-driven approach to develop and coordinate services.
Easily Simulate Robotics applications using realistic 3D simulated models. Since testing with real robots is often expensive, it saves money to start out in a simulated environment first and then move to real robots once the concepts have been proven to work. Microsoft Visual Simulation Environment (VSE) is based on Microsofts XNA Framework and the rendering engine uses AGEIA PhysX Technology from AGEIA Technologies Inc.. AGEIA Technologies Inc. Is a pioneer in hardware-accelerated physics, enabling real-world physics simulation for robot models. PhysX simulations can also be accelerated using AGEIA hardware. These simulations can be recorded and saved as XML files and played back over and over again.

Better To Have Less, But Better
Planning is of a vital issue. Positioning of everything starting from sanitary equipment, lifting pipes and hot and cold water pipes must be planned cleverly. The most important point to think about is space management. Positioning the lavatory to hide the discharge tank is often a preferred method for example. It improves the appearance and saves space. Pipes can be concealed under the sink or behind the shower cabin for the same advantages.
