UPDATE 24: Mexico News. Rusty Fleming on FOX7

Thursday, April 2, 2009
It's good to see that mainstream media is doing a better job of covering the drug wars in Mexico. All of the major networks are now covering big developments,  but a lot of important stories go unreported. I had an interview with Rusty Fleming this morning on Good Day Austin. Part of our conversation was about unreported kidnappings along the Texas border. He tells me that there were at least 50 kidnappings in the last year that were never reported to authorities (fewer than 2% of abductions are recorded). The reason, he says, is the fear of retribution. Many families along the border have relatives in Mexico and Texas-- if the families report that someone was kidnapped, then the cartels can go after relatives in Mexico AND in the U.S.; it's a problem without a solution for those families. Fleming says that most of the abductions are drug related.

What would you do?
