Texas smokers get hit again

Starting April Fool's Day, smokers in Texas will pay more to light up.  Despite the day, this federal tobacco tax is no joke.  It was two years ago that the state added 1.41 to each pack of cigarettes.  Now, add another 62 cents to each pack.  So cartons go from around 30 dollars to around 50 dollars.  And people who like to roll their own cigarettes are in trouble...that goes up from about a dollar a pound to 25 dollars a pound.

The federal tax will go to fund the children's Health Insurance Program or CHIP.  It's a program that insures lower income children.

Do you think this is fair?

  • This is another indication of how far we have come in our world.  It is obviously nothing more than a money grab (nothing that comes out of Austin or Washington is anything less, anymore) aimed at those our vaunted vultures in the seats of government view as marginal citizens.  They simply don't have the guts to outlaw cigarettes...nor do they, in any way, shape or means, want to cut out that revenue source.  Don't worry if you don't smoke...your favorite vice, whether it is good food, model airplanes, firearms, alcohol or anything you enjoy will be coming up shortly on the taxation block.  Now for the second argument:

The children of other people are not my responsibility.  If they can't afford insurance, they shouldn't have them.  And we seque to the third argument:

We don't need insurance for everyday medical needs.  Just pay for it.  Insurance should be for catastrophic illness only.  Somehow, we have placed all our medical needs in the hands of insurance when we should be responsible for the majority of our medical needs ourselves.  Believe me, without that HUGE bureaucracy behind the insurance companies we wouldn't be paying $400 for a box of kleenex.  It's a monster we have let loose and we need to euthanize the beast as soon as possible.  Sorry about the people who lose their jobs when we do it...but maybe they can find something actually productive in life to work at.

Oh...I'm a smoker.  I'm considering quitting.  I'm not going to quit for health reasons.  I'm not going to quit because I'm tired of coughing.  If I quit, I'm going to quit so that I don't send money to those jerks in Austin or Washington.  And I'm going to use a copier to take a picture of my social finger and send it to all of them with my letter telling them where to stick that money they won't be making off of me anymore.

It's my life...get out of it.  Go do something productive instead of using my tax money to buy your votes.
