APD Officer attacked

During a traffic stop in April of 2008, Detective David Nordstrom was attacked by a passenger with a box cutter.  Nordstrom says Joshua Landa cut in in the face and his neck.  Doctors say if the cut on the neck was just 2 mm deeper, Nordstrom would have bled to death.  In May 2009, Landa went to trial on his attempted capital murder charge, which is punishable up to 99 years in prison.  Despite the near fatal attack, Landa received 10 years probation.

What do you think...fair or unfair punishment

  • Fair?  Fair would be if we took Landa and cut him in the same way he cut the police officer.  I just hope the judge who ruled on the trial can sleep at night when this guy attacks an unarmed, defenseless citizen while on probation.  Virtually no punitive measures we use are fair.  Fair would be putting the same pain and hurt on the offender as the offender dealt out.  It's a sorry state when trials exclude anything that might have any bearing on the offender.  The rights of the accused far outweigh the rights of the innocent who walk the streets.  In fact, we don't have any rights.  Where are the rights for the girls in the yogurt shop?  Where are the rights of all the children who are abducted?  We seem totally unconcerned with those rights and insanely concerned with criminal's rights.  It all comes back to the fact that we are more concerned with how people see us than we are concerned about the next child a pedophile picks up.  Trying to be fair is about making other people see us as a "fair" person.  We need to be less concerned about how people see us and more concerned about how safe it is on our streets.  The clearest example I can give is the recent spate of "punch and run" incidents downtown.  It is now virtually "safe" to do this.  No one will snitch and you can harm with impunity.  Gosh, we've come such a long way!  Frankly, I'm glad there is a wait period on Concealed Handgun permits.  If we get enough of them out there, these thugs are going to find themselves looking down the barrel of a gun when they try to do these things and I can only hope the trigger is pulled.  I'd rather they were taken out than have to go through the expense of a trial.  Once they do something like a "punch and run," I don't think their life is worth a penny out of my pocket.  That's fair to me.

  • On the surface, it sounds like a rather light sentence. Cops get paid squat to take daily abuse and risk their lives every day.

    Was it a jury trial?

    What were the extenuating circumstances?

If you are wealthy, you will generally not receive a similar sentence than a person who has a public defender.
