APD Legend honored

It doesn't get much better than Kenny Wilson.

That's how an APD detective described the nearly 30 year veteran of the Austin Police Department.

And that's how many, many people feel about the Bomb Squad Sgt.  His colleagues say they walk among a legend.

Kenny was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2007.  Through it all, he still went to work.  He would undergo treatment during lunch and return to work afterwards.  He still went out on calls, worried about safety first, and always, I am told, looked out for his men.

In the summer of 2007, Kenny went into remission and everybody was happy and relieved for him.

Then in January, the cancer came back and it seems, with a vengence.  Work became painful.

The Austin Police Department honored Wilson Wednesday March 4th, with a Distinguished Command Medal.  It is one of the highest honors.  These are given to people who show consistent exceptional leadership and command over an extended period of time.  Chief Art Acevedo says, Kenny would have gotten this even if he wasn't sick.

A press conference was held and the Chief gave the award to Kenny's two sons.  The Chief presented the medal to Kenny earlier, by his bedside.  Randy, the oldest son, said he hopes to raise awareness about acid reflux and heart burn.  It reminded me of Ann Richards.

I couldn't say this in the story that aired today but thank you, Kenny, for showing all of us what it means to be a great person.  You have made such a difference in so many people's lives.
